Business in Hawaii with Reg Baker and Dr. Shim

Aloha –

Dr. Walton Shim MD is a surgeon who started SmarTummy when he was in his 80's. His patented surgical training innovation could revolutionize how surgeons are trained.  Just another example that age does not matter when starting a business.

I will be taking the summer off from Business in Hawaii and will reappear occasionally for special broadcasts.  After 3 years and 150 shows I need to recharge the batteries! Please look for my articles in the Hawaii Business magazine and presentations for various Chambers, SBA and other business organizations.

Business in Hawaii with Reg Baker - Preserving Hawaii

Aloha!!

This week's Business in Hawaii is about preserving Hawaii's historical buildings and communities.  ABC Stores is doing a great job of preserving Hawaii and her history. Hear Paul Kosasa, CEO of ABC Stores, explain how with Minatoishi Architects he is accomplishing so much.

The link - https://youtu.be/yvNrVMQDlio?t=24

Tax season is counting down.  Only a few more weeks and pau.  This year was much more complicated due to the tax passage of tax reform in December.  This resulted in lots of confusion and challenges.  Most of the returns I prepared for 2017 showed a nice tax savings for 2018 when considering the reduced tax rates combined with the increased tax brackets and doubling of the standard deduction.  With this in mind please check out the blog post below.

For those that get paychecks, please note the following blog article I recently posted to put a few extra dollars in your pocket:

IRS Encourages a Paycheck Checkup

As we approach the end of a very complex and challenging tax season for both tax preparers and tax payers, the IRS is reminding all employees to do a "Paycheck Checkup".

The tax reform act that was passed in late December 2017 has significant implications for tax payers who receive a paycheck and have taxes withheld.  Tax rates are lower for most and tax brackets are wider, which means less taxes need to be withheld.  Combined with the doubling of the standard deduction, that 70% of taxpayers use, results in a real opportunity to significantly increase your "take home" pay.

First step is to get the updated and revised W-4 and complete as accurately as possible, especially the worksheet on page 3.  Use this IRS link Form W-4.  Give the competed W-4 to your employer and ask them to update their payroll records they have on you.  Assuming your employer has the most recent payroll withholding tables issued by the IRS last month, you should see an immediate increase in your net paycheck (take home pay) in your next pay check.

Please see the full IRS newsletter using this link - IRS Paycheck Checkup

The sooner you do your paycheck checkup the faster you will see that increase in take home pay!

Business in Hawaii with Reg Baker

Aloha!!

Hope all is well this very taxing time of the year……  Sorry, couldn't help myself with a little tax humor.

Young CPA's are changing the industry and this weeks Business in Hawaii show demonstrates why.  Here is the link - https://youtu.be/UO-LM7UMjSU?t=29

Hawaii Business Magazine had an article about the positive aspects of increasing prices.  Here is the link - Hawaii Business Magazine article by Reg Baker

Finally, an article on Tax Reform in Hawaii Business Magazine - https://www.hawaiibusiness.com/events/recap on tax reform

Three more weeks and tax season is over, at least for me.  This year was particularly challenging because of al the confusion over tax reform and what the impact will be.  From my recent experience this tax season, almost everyone will benefit except those making over $300,000 a year.  They will pay more.

All the best till next week!

Business in Hawaii - Law Practice in Hawaii Update

Aloha!

Busy week with tax season and tax reform both going strong.

Fascinating conversation with Matt Matsunaga and Tony Donnes about their firm and the practice of law in Hawaii. Great advice for those in their second or third year of law school.  Here is the link - https://youtu.be/_toPx_nwD3w?t=29

Got two big presentations coming up on tax reform.  One for Hawaii Business Magazine on March 9 and another on March 12 for the Financial Planners Assoc of Hawaii.  Got to find time for tax work! LOL!

KHON Shout Out!!  Thank you KHON for launching a new business segment called "Business Matters".  It was awful lonely being the only business focused news show highlighting successful small businesses and their owners in Hawaii.  Now there are two of us!   There is so much small business success we will never run out of stories.  Thanks for joining in!

Business in Hawaii with Reg Baker - Fixing Payroll Problems

Aloha!!

Payroll and HR issues can be very challenging for a small business. These guys fix that chaos and make it easy.  And possibly save you money as well.

Here is the link to this week's Business in Hawaii - https://youtu.be/CuX3HEWbrqE?t=26

And here is the link to the current Hawaii Reporter article - http://wp.me/p8dr7Y-28Gb

As we all know, tax season is in full swing.  This year is more challenging than ever due to the Tax Cut and Jobs Act passed last December. Not only do we need to deal with current tax preparation we need to figure out how the new rules will impact 2018 estimated tax payments.  And there is much confusion on exactly what congress intended in some areas of the so called "tax reform".  Stay tuned as this tax reform unfolds during the next year or so.  Here is a link to the very lively Tax Reform debate Jay Fidel (Founder of Think Tech Hawaii) and I had on January 30.  https://youtu.be/JKqQ6n3m738?t=27

Business in Hawaii with Reg Baker - Preparing High School Students for Successful Careers & Tax Scam Season

Aloha!

This week's show was very enlightening and exciting.  Shayne Greenland, the Academy Principal for Business at Campbell High School (he largest high school in Hawaii located on the west side of Oahu – think Ewa and Kapolei) told us how he and his team are getting the students ready for entering the workforce and being successful.  This includes internships, work study, learning a trade and college.  What a great program and something all high school (Kauai already doing this) should be offering.  Congrats Campbell High School!

Also, tax season is here and so are the tax scams!  These scammers are out in full force and using very aggressive tactics to get you to give them your money.  Do not fall for these scams!  Steve Pingree, one of the leading tax defense attorney's in Hawaii, offers some very sage advice:

  • The IRS never calls people to collect money.
  • The IRS never threatens jail or bank seizure over the phone.
  • The IRS never demands debit card info or money orders.
  • Repeat IRS never telephones people—hang up immediately 👍

Finally, this was the lead story on KHON Fox Tuesday night (some may have already seen this) about the scams currently hitting Hawaii.  Very serious situation, especially for our Kapuna (elderly).  The scammers are very aggressive and pushing for an immediate payment or they threaten jail or bank account seizure.  Never pay by phone.  Never meet an IRS agent anywhere other than in clearly identifiable IRS offices.  And always be skeptical.

http://khon2.com/2018/01/16/beware-scams-by-thieves-posing-as-the-irs/

Please listen carefully to my commentary warning of the risk and pass the word to warn everyone of this very aggressive scam.
